Planning to bring your own rifle for your safari? No problem! South Africa has a straightforward firearm import process, and we are here to guide you through it. Follow these steps to ensure a hassle-free experience when traveling with your firearm.

FIREARM IMPORT REQUIREMENTS​

Valid Passport

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

Completed SAPS 520 Form

The official temporary firearm import permit from the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Proof of Ownership

A copy of your firearm license or a notarized affidavit proving ownership.

Invitation Letter from Your Hunting Outfitter

We will provide this document to confirm your hunting safari.

Airline Regulations Compliance

Firearms must be transported in a hard, lockable case, and ammunition must be packed separately in a secure container.

STEP-BY-STEP FIREARM IMPORT​

STEP 1

  • Download and complete the SAPS 520 Form (do not sign it yet; it must be signed in front of a police officer upon arrival).
  • Obtain a letter from us (your outfitter) confirming your hunt.
  • Check airline requirements for firearm transport.

Pre-Trip Preparation

STEP 2

  • Collect your firearm case at the special baggage counter (not the regular luggage carousel).
  • Proceed to the South African Police Firearm Office at the airport.
  • Present your completed SAPS 520 form and required documents.
  • A police officer will inspect your firearm and issue your Temporary Firearm Import Permit.

Upon Arrival in South Africa

STEP 3

  • Always carry your firearm permit with you while hunting.
  • Firearms must remain secured when not in use.

During Your Safari

STEP 4

  • Return to the Firearm Office at the airport for an exit inspection.
  • Ensure all documentation is in order before checking in your rifle.

Departure from South Africa

FIREARM RESTRICTIONS

  • Bolt-action, lever-action, and single-shot rifles
  • Shotguns for hunting purposes

ALLOWED

  • Automatic and semi-automatic rifles
  • Handguns (unless for competition shooting with special permits)
  • Military-style firearms

PROHIBITED

  • Maximum of 200 rounds per firearm.
  • Ammunition must be transported in a separate locked container.
